Belize Paradise: The Coppola Hideaways, Turtle Inn

A wellness lover, drawn to nature’s gifts…

Flying low over the Belizean coast, the world dissolves into shimmering blues, turquoise shallows fading into deep sapphire channels, mangroves lacing the shoreline with quiet intention. As you descend toward Placencia, the peninsula stretches like a slender brushstroke between lagoon and sea, a place where the wild breathes in every direction.

Arriving at Turtle Inn, feels like stepping into this living tapestry. Owned by the Coppola family, the inn greets you with thatched-roof elegance and barefoot serenity, where the Caribbean whispers at your doorstep, every moment is part of a story written by the sea itself.

Turtle Inn’s rich history…

Original owner Skip White first came to Placencia in the 1970s in search of farmland. He and his family eventually opened the eco resort Turtle Inn Beach Cabanas, guided by a passion for the local ecosystem and a love for storytelling. His legendary tales of jungle excursions, gathering leaves for the cabanas’ thatched roofs, still echo through the property. Along the lobby walkway, a framed boa snakeskin honors his longtime pet, Leonardo da Vinci, a whimsical reminder of his adventurous spirit.

The laid-back, gracious hospitality instantly soothes the senses. Each morning unfolds slowly, rising to a lush symphony of birdsong. Color-drenched tropical blooms float in water basins outside each bungalow, small acts of beauty offered with quiet generosity. Waking here feels like slipping into heaven itself, ready to meet another perfect day in paradise.

Twenty-five bungalows, Balinese-inspired…

Each one a private sanctuary whispered into the shoreline. Step inside and you’re into your own met with handcrafted furnishings, a screened-in porch for lingering meals and slow conversation, and a dark-green tiled bath opening to a deliciously private outdoor shower. Turtle Inn’s handmade soaps and hair care, infused with tropical botanicals, feels both indulgent and grounding. A king-size bed dressed in airy, organic linens rests beneath soaring ceilings, a grand feathered fan stirs the night air.

Dining at Turtle Inn…

Sunrise breakfast arrives complimentary and in-room: fresh-baked breads, vibrant fruit, creamy yogurt, hard-boiled eggs from the garden healthy chickens, crunchy granola, sweet jams, butter and a steaming pot of organic tea or coffee.

There’s Mare Restaurant, elegant and breeze-kissed; the stunning Wine Aquarium, where bottles glow like jewels; the Gauguin Grill, bringing the sea to your plate with fire and finesse; and Auntie Luba’s Kitchen, serving soul-satisfying Belizean dishes that taste like home, the conch fritters are a must. At the Pizzeria, the Sofia is golden and wood-fired, bright, and Neapolitan-style, topped with prosciutto, fresh arugula, mozzarella, and a balsamic drizzle named for Sofia Coppola, a favorite of Francis Ford Coppola himself.

The dress code drifts effortlessly from crisp white shirts to tank tops and sarongs, open-toe luxury at its finest. Light on your feet, you’re invited to linger, as the day melts into night.

Wellness…

The Sunset Spa is beautifully intimate, offering healing rituals within an open-air Balinese rice house, hand-painted murals wrapping around you like a quiet invitation, drawing body and spirit deeper into this sacred space.

We experienced the most extraordinary Thai massage, an artful blend of traditional technique and warm lemongrass essential oil. Ask for Jum; her hands carry a rare magic, a lineage passed down from the revered Wat Pho Temple in Bangkok. It enters my top five treatments.

Across the way-teatime…

A charming Tea House tucked within the organic garden, brimming with medicinal herbs. Take a piece of the magic home with packaged Turtle Inn’s herbal teas from basil, sorrel, lemongrass, soursop to allspice leaf mint. I could spend hours within this sacred space.

Day excursion to Laughing Bird Caye…

This National Park is a remote, protected sanctuary for coral and marine life. A 45-minute speedboat ride deposits you into crystal-clear, electric-blue waters, for an unforgettable snorkel, best done with a guide or ranger. What awaits is a kaleidoscope: rainbow fish, lobster hiding among coral, intricate brain coral formations, schools of shimmering fish, starfish, glinting barracuda, and countless underwater surprises.

Ask about the Butterfly Farm....

Martin Krediet, an old friend from my New York to Miami hospitality days, now oversees operations for The Coppola Hideaways. His warmth, effortless style, and deep knowledge make him a tremendous asset. During our visit, he led us through the butterfly farm just a few doors down, a winged, sweet delight, vibrant butterflies dancing the air, kissing your cheek. A living testament to nature’s quiet magic.

Signing off…

The journey was more than sun-soaked days and drifting turquoise waters, it was an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to feel the steady heartbeat of land that once nourished the ancient Mayan world, its stories still, woven through the sand, the mangroves, and the reef.

Restored, and grateful. Thank you Turtle Inn.
